HelmSwarm vs AWS Device Farm

AWS Device Farm meters real-device testing by the minute — so teams ration tests to control cost. HelmSwarm runs the same real-device iOS automation on iPhones you own or rent from us, on a flat monthly subscription — no per-minute meter, and when you self-host, data never leaves your network.

How much does AWS Device Farm cost?

AWS Device Farm charges $0.17 per device-minute on pay-as-you-go, or $250 per device slot per month for unlimited testing — with separate slots required per device family (iOS / Android). Five slots run about $1,250/month (~$15,000/year), and slots determine how many devices test simultaneously, so adding concurrency means buying more slots.

Why do teams ration tests on AWS Device Farm?

Because the bill is metered. As one analysis puts it, teams managing cost “start making testing decisions based on the meter: fewer devices, fewer CI triggers, shorter suites.” That is exactly backwards — coverage shrinks to fit the invoice, not the risk.

A per-minute meter turns every CI run into a cost decision. Nightly full-suite runs across many real devices — the runs that actually catch regressions — are the first thing teams cut.

How is HelmSwarm different?

HelmSwarm is self-hosted real-device iOS automation. You connect your own iPhones through a local agent; the platform runs on your own server. The consequences:

Is human-paced automation “undetectable”?

No — and we won't claim it is. Modern bot detection combines app, session and device fingerprints across hundreds of signals, so timing alone is never a guarantee. What human-paced execution does do is materially reduce rate-limit and lockout risk versus machine-gun automation. Honest framing matters more than a false promise.

When does each one make sense?

AWS Device Farm fits occasional, low-volume runs where you never want to own hardware and don't mind data in the cloud. HelmSwarm fits teams that test often, at scale, on devices they control — and don't want coverage dictated by a per-minute meter or test data leaving their network.
